Station 1

Where it began

With limited financial resources and despite the considerable generosity of members, for decades our Hall had survived a sustained period of piecemeal repairs that kept it upright and watertight (but only just!).

Skinners’ Hall was in dire need of major intervention.

Old and inefficient mechanical and electrical services needed a costly overhaul, and the staff offices were outdated. Infrastructure was ill-equipped to cope with the requirements of modern communications, the building was not very accessible, and we were unable to capitalise on the building’s potential to become a first-class venue for Company and commercial events.

Skinner, David Beale, left a significant legacy that provided the Company with an opportunity to address all these concerns. In 2017, the Court decided to devote a considerable proportion of the funds from the sale of Beale’s land to the Hall’s redevelopment and specified that the completed building must be used to provide a return on the investment, and thereby enable the Company to focus increased attention on its philanthropic activities.
So the task of choosing the best team of experts to transform the Grade One listed building with Ancient Monument status began.
